Abstract
African societies are going through a wave of social changes that gradually alter lifestyles, value systems, and socialization processes. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in general, and Kinshasa in particular, these transformations take place in a context marked by rapid urbanization, modernity that reflects globalization, the rise of new information and communication technologies, structural changes in economic systems, and tensions related to sociopolitical crises that redefine social relationships. In this social environment, youth serve as a key laboratory for ideas in the contemporary dynamics of social change. In this context, they appear as a social construct whose identity-building process is shaped by cultural heritage, structural constraints, and transcultural influences.
This reflection allows for a reading of the socialization processes and identity reconstructions of young people in the Kimbanseke commune, in the capital city of Kinshasa. It starts from the observation that research on Congolese youth has mainly focused on issues of poverty, violence, unemployment, or exclusion, while paying less attention to the everyday strategies through which young people in Kinshasa produce their sense of belonging, reinterpret social norms, and develop new forms of sociability. The aim of this research is to understand the foundations on which young people rebuild new identities by redefining their relationships with social institutions in an environment marked by ongoing social transformations.
This analysis is part of an anthropological approach that allows for drawing on the theoretical contributions of a few authors. The research is characterized by a qualitative approach supported by field observations, in-depth interviews, and the analysis of social practices created by young people in their everyday environment.
The results show that the identity reconstructions observed among young people in Kinshasa in general, and in the Kimbanseke commune in particular, preserve cultural heritage while transforming it. This transformation happens within the context of globalization. They also reveal an ongoing process of negotiation between the different socializing influences we mentioned, such as family, religion, culture, educational institutions (schools), digital platforms, multinational companies, and contemporary imaginaries. In the face of this ambiguity, young Kinshasans create a cultural mix where they have to shape multiple identities that are flexible and context specific. This reflex shows their ability to adapt quickly and embrace innovation in response to social changes.
The contribution of this research is to help enrich the anthropological analysis of Congolese youth in general, and Kinshasa youth in particular, by showing how those from Kimbanseke are not just passive receivers of social change, but active participants in rebuilding their own social ties, forms of sociability, and cultural references in the city of Kinshasa.
